How the Subaru Ascent was Rated

Earning the top spot with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for their moderate overlap front crash test is not a walk in the park. It reflects the immense work put into the 2023 Subaru Ascent to improve safety. IIHS introduced the new, tougher moderate impact front crash test to encourage safety improvements for rear-seat passengers as part of its ongoing efforts to improve vehicle safety. The IIHS tested the Subaru Ascent alongside 12 other midsize to large SUVs using a Hybrid III dummy representing a woman or 12-year-old child positioned in the second row behind the driver. The procedure also uses specific metrics focusing on the injuries most frequently seen in rear-seat occupants. The evaluation tracked by sensors in the dummy placed on the second row must not exceed limits displaying an excessive risk of injury to delicate body parts such as the head, neck, chest, abdomen, or thigh to earn a "Good" rating. Video footage and grease paint placed on the dummy's head must confirm that the vehicle's safety features prevented the injuries. It must show that the restraints prevented the coming together of the head and the vehicle interior or coming too close to the front seatback and stopped the dummy's body from sliding forward beneath the lap belt. A pressure sensor that monitors the shoulder belt's position on the dummy's torso is also used to help measure the risk of chest injuries.

As in the original test, the design of the occupant compartment must also maintain adequate survival space for the driver, and dimensions taken from the driver dummy must not show an excessive risk of injuries. Following these evaluations, the Subaru Ascent was one of only four vehicles in the tested group to earn the highest possible rating of "Good."
