2022 Subaru BRZ Named Top Rated Sports Car by Edmunds at Subaru Sherman Oaks

You do not need to know the new 2022 Subaru BRZ 0-60-mph, and there is no reason to worry about grabbing a car skidpad. We've reviewed both manual and manual versions, but you should not worry about those results, either. Combining it with numbers misses the point. Instead, it would be best if you judged BRZ by how it feels - how it connects you with all the details on the asphalt, on every corner, on any road.

It's amazing. BRZ makes you want to take an extra trip to the store because you realize you want bananas. It's the kind of car where, in the days after driving, you find yourself remembering every time a Subaru shows you something new about itself and your skills. In the end, it just so happens that any level of driving you to do will simply change the amount of time you enjoy the machine around you - speed or speed does not matter. Putting any of these in numbers only reduces the positive feeling that makes BRZ special.

A Punchier Boxer

As before, the 2022 Subaru BRZ is powered by a flat-four engine, now eliminating 2.4 liters. The output measures 228 hp and 184 lb of torque and is sent to the appropriate wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Unlike the previous BRZ, the power and torque are the same regardless of transmission. Everything is still distributed between the rear tires with a slight slip difference.

There is no longer a mid-range torque dip that hit the first 2.0-liter BRZ. The maximum torque now reaches 3,700 rpm, almost where it used to bend, where the tachometer easily switches to the 7,500-rpm redline. Hearing the power line makes turbocharged or electric powertrains look breathless. Unfortunately, this engine does not sound right; it goes up, not better if it moves up. That ugly, old note is more sensitive to its hot pull than its silent exit.

Manual Majesty

The six-speed setup is excellent. It is a strong, smooth movement for reasonable adjustment and a proper grip of the clutch, and the space for the pedals to drop down the heel and toe.

However, we found it tricky to present the BRZ manual regularly on the test route. We selected Track mode, moved the revs closer to 4,500 rpm, dropped the clutch, allowed the tail to move slightly, and loaded the full throttle to make the car run forward happily. The gauge-cluster shift indicator usually raises the upshift prematurely, but the shift to 7,000 rpm provided the best time of 5.9 seconds. The result made this first Subaru BRZ we tried to break the 6-second bar. Like our previous revision car of the 2016 Series Hyperblue, the outgoing manual model hit 60 mph between 6.3 and 6.8 seconds.

Similarly, the 2022 BRZ's 14.3-second, 99.8-mph quarter-mile miles make it a ready-to-race version of our test logs, defeating previous BRZs in about 1 second and 5.0 mph.
